Introduction

Many of our tailors are refugees from this remote, troubled and fascinating mountain land. These pages provide an introduction for those who wish to know more about Tibet and its history.

In 1949 Tibet was invaded by the Chinese army. Since then, China has transformed its small neighbour, dragging it into the modern age, but at great human cost. In 1959, in the face of the violent suppression of mass popular uprisings, the 14th Dalai Lama was forced to flee his homeland along with 100,000 fellow Tibetans.

Establishing the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, North India, Tibet's spiritual leader has since worked tirelessly for a peaceful resolution to the Chinese occupation.
